CNN Travel is proposing a modern version of the Grand Tours that was once a rite of passage for youth in the 18th and 19th century. This includes the Apuseni mountains, part of he Western Carpathian Mountains, located in Transylvania. The picturesque region, populated with a rich wildlife, unique in Europe, that includes the brown bear and the wolf, is described by the author of the tour as “ideal summer break, with cooler temperatures and uncrowded paths through ancient woodland and limestone crags.” In addition to hosting spectacular landscapes and charming villages that offer a quieter and more accessible alternative to hiking in the Alps, Apuseni Mountains are also home to some of the largest caves in Romania and in Europe.
